Broken
Bernard stormed in the door after work, still fuming from the argument he'd had with his boss. He tried to put out the fire with one beer after another, but they only stoked his rage until the careless swing of a fist sent Isabelle's treasured porcelain doll crashing to the floor. She picked up the pieces as a tear glistened on her cheek.
"Don't worry, honey, I can fix it," he said, though the distant look on her face told him more had been broken than the delicate figurine.
"You said you'd never hit anyone—again."
